Wellsville, New York ( ) was settled in the early 1800's and serves as the largest community in Allegany County. As of the 2010 census, the town had a population of 7,397. The village is located in the south half of the county, 8 miles north of the Pennsylvania border. Alfred State College maintains a branch campus in the town, with the main campus in Alfred, New York. The Wesleyan campus of Houghton College is located at the north end of the county in Houghton, New York.
Wellsville is home to the David A. Howe Public Library, the Pink House, The Great Wellsville Balloon Rally, Ridgewalk & Run, Texas Hot Restaurant, Wellsville Creative Arts Center and the Great Wellsville Trout Derby (on the Genesee River). The main producers of economy include Ljungstrom, Current Controls, Northern Lights Candles Company, Otis Eastern Services and Release Coatings of NY. Notable persons (past & present) from Wellsville include Grace Livingston Hill (author who wrote more than 100 novels and numerous short stories - her characters were most often young female Christian women or those who became so within the confines of the story); George "Gabby" Hayes (well-known actor in may 1900's western movies - most notably alongside Roy Rogers); Bill Parker (former sports broadcaster and author); John Rigas (founder of Adelphia Communications and former owner of the Buffalo Sabres); and Ted Taylor (nuclear physicist who became a nuclear disarmament advocate).
The Wellsville Area Ministerial Association (WAMA) consists of a unified group of clergy from Wellsville and the neighboring communities who pray and work together to proclaim the Good News of the gospel by planning and holding ministry related outreach events and cooperative services within the community. These include the Community Good Friday Service; a Baccalaureate Service (in conjunction with the graduating class of Wellsville High School); the Community Thanksgiving Service; and the Community Service of Praise & Worship. They also work together to provide Sunday Services for the area Nursing Homes and Assisted Care Living facilities and combine their efforts and resources to provide a volunteer Chaplaincy service to the Wellsville Jones Memorial Hospital. Special events have been a county-wide evangelistic crusade (Billy Graham Evangelistic Association & Dr. John Guest), Heaven's Gates & Hell's Flames, Power Team, and Rock the Tarmac. WAMA has been instrumental in bringing several feature Christian films to the Grand Theater in Wellsville. The Wellsville Area Ministerial Association meets together at a host church on the second Wednesday of each month (except for July-August).
Mission Genesee Valley consists of a unified group of clergy from the surrounding area whose vision is to unite born again followers of Jesus Christ in a fervent and faithful seeking of God that releases His favor and results in an organic unity and a revival of the Body of Christ across denominational lines. Out of this unity will emerge a concerted seeking of God's specific strategies to minister grace and mercy to our region, to intercede, and to effectively reach our region with the redeeming message of the gospel.
Hope Center is a cooperative effort among various churches of Allegany County whose focus is to seek to reach out, connect with and assist those who are struggling with all types of life issues. It's goals are to connect with those who are in need, assist in determining the full needs of individuals or families, provide assistance in identifying resources, serve as an advocate when necessary, and to pray with those who come to the facility. The intent is to connect attendees back to participating churches for discipleship, growth and service.
